Imogen shared her rather touching story about Dark Alliance a few months ago.As we step back into a society with caution after the last year+ (I say that cautiously too, I still wear a mask out.) Me and my friend have began to meet up again for gaming nights. How is this possible? The answer is “she nan”. So it came as a surprise when our former intern Imogen Beckhelling announced – not much older herself – that she is a huge fan of Shadow Alliance. Not many people remember Dark Alliance these days. Snowblind was then fused with Monolith to create Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Still, Snowblind will go on to be the spiritual successor of sorts in The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but it’s a pair of pants. A planned third game fell through when Black Isle was shut down and Interplay went bankrupt. The original was developed by Snowblind with help from the publisher Black Isle, and was released in 2001, and the sequel in 2004, by Black Isle.

“We don’t know the price yet, but it’s not a free game,” he said.īaldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance is basically Baldur’s Gate for consoles and therefore more speed and action. Hattem couldn’t talk about cross-platform play but did say that Dark Alliance won’t be a free-to-play game. Hattem won’t specify which console Dark Alliance is in development for, but keep in mind that a fall 2020 release date will bring the game into next-gen, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Scarlett territory. Vermintide’s co-op aspect is similar. Our game plays completely differently from Vermintide because theirs is first person and ours is third person. Our game won’t do justice to Vermintide, or other comparable products, that involve one-on-one. It seems to have the same vibe.īut Hattem said: “Our game is its own thing. The trailer (embedded) reminds me of Warhammer: Vermintide, another four-player action RPG but a first-person game. But beyond that, and D&D being the primary inspiration, there’s not much else to know right now. We know the playable characters are Drizzt Do’Urden, Cattie-Brie, Bruenor and Wulfgar, and they have unique abilities and equipment, and you’ll be able to customize them. Four players will be able to play through the entire story, online or locally, in split-screen split-screen.īut actual gameplay details are very thin.
However, co-op will still be the foundation of the experience.
“We wanted to put the camera in for a more intimate and visceral experience with the rigors of Icewind Dale,” says Hattem. Perhaps more importantly, a fresh start means moving from top-down to third-person gameplay. New Beginnings means leaving the Baldur’s Gate setting and moving into Icewind Dale, hence the name change, but the story will continue to revolve around the story of Drizzt Do’Urden and RA Salvatore. “We feel like this is a fresh start for the franchise.”
It’s been so long since the original Dark Alliance and Dark Alliance 2 – that was many generations ago, console generations – we felt it wouldn’t make it – those two games are really cool and we put our own spin on everything. “It’s a new story,” Jeff Hattem, head of Tuque studios told me in an interview. Wizards acquired Tuque a few months ago and there are about 55 people working there.īack to Dark Alliance: it will be a spiritual successor, not a direct successor, to the Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance games from the PlayStation 2 and Xbox eras. Livelock, the studio’s first game, looks like a pretty good co-op action RPG, which bodes well.
